Loadshedding gives a serious dent to leather industry

The prolonged load-shedding by the KESC in the industrial areas has resulted in massive production and material losses running into multi millions in the leather industry of Korangi Industrial Area . KIA, having a largest cluster of tanneries has remained massively disturbed for the last two days due to 12 to 16 hours load-shedding by the KESC and so far suffered losses of hnudreds of millions of rupees due to production loss besides damage of raw material. The Chairman Pakistan Tanners Association (S.Z) Aziz Ahmed has said that the tanneries have to face massive loss of production as the tanneries could not continue processing of leather. He said that in the mid of high season of leather processing after Eidul Azha the tanneries are full of skins and hides lying fir processing and if the load-shedding would not be stopped immediately the leather sector would have to suffer losses to the tune of billions of rupees. He said that a major part of the leather industry of Pakistan is located in Karachi wherein about 70 per cent of the exportable commodity of finished leather are being processed from raw hides and skins, which also caters to the need of its other sub-sector like leather garments and made-ups. full story
