Govt waives duty, sales tax to boost livestock, dairy sectors
 Muzaffar Hameed May 3, 2010, 06:29:40 AM

ISLAMABAD: For increasing exports of fish, shrimps and other seafood items, the government has decided in the budget 2009-10 to exempt imports of machinery, equipment and implements from all sorts of duty and sales tax. There was an enormous potential to enhance exports of fish, shrimps and other seafood items but these required special handling and controlled environment due to perishable in nature. The Ministry of Livestock and Dairy Development had identified export of fish and other seafood items might be increased too much if proper machineries and equipments were provided at reasonable rates without any duty. The government agreed subject to the provision of certificate from Ministry that the items required only for this sector. The fishing sector was highly un-organised nature of private sector, lack of focus in government policies and little institutional investment in public and private sector projects. The fisheries sector in Pakistan had offer direct employment to thousands of people, most of which work as fishermen. The government took numerous measures for development of dairy sector in the budget 2009-10. The government also exempt import of Betain, (an important chemical used in the poultry feed) from custom duty. The poultry industry had sought exemption of custom duty on import of this chemical, which would help in reducing input costs of the industry. The government allowed import of betain (PCT code 2923.9010) without custom duty. To support the dairy industry, the government also exempt Calf Milk Replacer (CMR) from 20 percent duty. The CMR was used for the calves as replacement of cow milk and the item was chargeable at 20 percent duty. The Ministry of Livestock and Dairy Development had sought the exemption of duty so that the industry might flourish. The government exempted the item from duty subject to certification by the Ministry
