KARACHI: Indonesian Ambassador to Pakistan Ishak Latuconsina has said despite low rice exports to Indonesia there is no ban on its imports from Pakistan. Speaking at a meeting at the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) House here on Monday, he said his country was in negotiations with Pakistan to sign a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) by the end of the current year. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, had placed a non-official ban on Pakistani rice when it rejected a low quality shipment. “There was no rice export from Pakistan in recent years and Indonesia’s importing authority Bulog did not entertain tenders from Pakistan.” He said trade-related issues could be resolved through interaction with the stakeholders of the business from both sides, adding Indonesia was one of the major rice producing and consuming nations in the world and rice was an important crop because of the growing population and increasing demand. Since January 2008, he said, Indonesia had not imported the commodity and the prime reason was that it had achieved self-sufficiency in rice production. “In fact, we are considering exporting rice,” he said. However, he said it did not mean there was no possibility of rice exports to Indonesia. “I am an admirer of Pakistani rice, especially basmati for its unique taste and aroma.” REAP Chairman Abdul Rahim Janoo, in his welcome address, said rice exports to Indonesia were banned in 1999. He said Pakistan was the third largest exporter of rice after Thailand and Vietnam and if Indonesia opened its market, Pakistan would become the second largest rice exporter. In spite of international bumper crops and global recession, he said, Pakistan had achieved the milestone of $2 billion worth of exports through shipment of around three million tons of rice in the current fiscal year. Janoo said Pakistan had 200 modern mills and laboratories and it had improved on the side of quality. “Once Indonesia met around 30 percent of its rice demand from Pakistan but now there is no grain export to Indonesia.” Later, the rice millers warmly welcomed the announcement from the Indonesian ambassador that there was no ban on Pakistani rice. |
