Minister wants energy mix to be altered to make electricity cheaper
 admin May 3, 2010, 04:10:27 AM

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf on Friday stressed for balancing the country’s energy mix to provide affordable electricity to the consumers. Speaking to media persons after chairing the 18th board meeting of the Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB), he said renewable energy had a critical role to play in meeting the growing energy needs. Renewable energy technologies would be an essential element in Pakistan’s energy future by making major contributions to the diversity and security of energy supply of the country and to its economic development, he emphasised. “Pakistan has a vast array of renewable energy sources. We are turning that into a reality with a progressive and distinct approach to make renewable a driver of sustainable economic growth,” the minister added. “It is vital we maximise Pakistan’s natural resources to help in the fight against climate change and reduce our reliance on volatile foreign fossil fuel,” he added. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to end load shedding in the country by December 2009. He disclosed that two Independent Power Producers (IPPs) with a combine production capacity of 450 megawatts (MW) have started test operations. He said ending load shedding was not the ultimate goal of the government rather it was making all out efforts to provide affordable, clean and environment friendly energy to the people. He said that the AEDB board now has a greater responsibility to help develop all available alternative energy resources in Pakistan. Now they were moving fast. The government would provide all-out support to public and private sector organisations for the development of alternative energy in the country. The board was informed that the AEDB had been assigned by the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet to implement the national bio-diesel programme. Several private sector organisations had shown interest in bio-diesel production and sought land for plantations. Bio-diesel could be extracted from sunflower, canola, mustard, rape seed, soybean, pongame (sukh-chaien), castor seed and jatropha. The AEDB had already started collaboration with the PSO and had facilitated it in establishing its jatropha nursery and production of bio-diesel on small scale. A bio-diesel advisory committee had been constituted to steer the national programme. A national seminar on bio-diesel was being held in Islamabad on July 4, 2009 to discuss various issues related to implementation of the programme. The recommendations of the seminar would be used in developing the policy and regulatory framework for bio-diesel
