Huge quantity of Pakistani fruits and vegetables destined for different countries across-the-globe via road are stuck up in containers at Pak-Afghan border for the last three days posing expected colossal financial losses to the exporters, farmers and fruit processors. More than 200 trucks laden with potato and kinnow are stuck up at Torkham border. The trucks are destined for Central Asian states. Exporters have attributed this extreme act of the Afghan government as failure of the Commerce Ministry and Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to take cognizance of this alarming situation. Exporters revealed that the Afghanistan’s side says that Pakistan has stopped its trucks at Karachi port, Chaman and Torkham borders for no valid reason so it has stopped Pakistani trucks from crossing the Torkham border. Already export of Pakistani fruit to Iran via road and other sources is already closed for the last one year but ironically import of Iranian fruit, including apple and grapes to Pakistan, continues unabatedly which is hurting local apple sales.
